Hazardous Blinds
IKEA, a Swedish home decor company, has recently announced on June 10, 2010 that it is voluntarily recalling over 3 million window blinds. The reason, as stated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, is the risk of strangulation posed by the free hanging cords of the window blinds. This recall includes roman shades, roll-up blinds and certain types of roller blinds that do not have tension devices and were sold in the U.S. between January 1998 and June 2010. These 3 million recalled window treatments are in addition to several previous recalls in 2008 and 2009. In November, 2008 and August, 2009 about 790,000 roman shades were recalled and, in October, 2009 533,000 roller blinds were recalled. IKEA has decided to take this action as a precautionary measure to prevent any further injury or harm to their customers.
Customers are advised to stop using the products immediately and return them to any IKEA location for a full refund. IKEA advises that you keep cords and looped bead chains out of reach of young children. Install safety devices and reduce the access to cords. Move beds and furniture away from the blinds and shades to prevent children from climbing and reaching the cords. IKEA has also offered assistance in making the necessary safety corrections if the customer wishes to keep the window blind.
If you want to find high-quality window treatments at discount prices, there are online retailers that provide an excellent selection from all the industry leading brands. By shopping online, you do not have to sacrifice quality or safety in order to find affordable window treatments. The online shopping process is extremely easy and convenient and you are buying from companies that specialize in blinds as opposed to a generic retailer. So, next time you are in the market for window treatments look online for great deals on custom, quality blinds and shades before you get in your car and head to IKEA.

The Hunter Douglas online shelves are empty
As of June 1st 2010, Hunter Douglas blinds and shades will no longer be available from any online merchant, anywhere. For all of you Hunter Douglas customers who are looking for a quality replacement, allow me to introduce a couple of brands you may not know as well – Graber and Kirsch.
In what I deem a very strange decision, Hunter Douglas (HD) decided that it’s brand was too important to sell online. I guess they don’t want to sully their beloved brand identity. Now the only way you can purchase their window treatments is through their authorized brick and mortar retail stores. Forget good deals, now you have to pay for the deluxe service.
Ok, admittedly, HD makes good products. They offer a wide range of blinds and shades in fashion forward styles and colors and with all the options you could ever think of. If you want motorized triple cell cellular shades, HD offers them. But, truthfully, the VAST majority of people who purchase window treatments just want good quality products. I bet only one in ten people even know that window blinds can come motorized… A lot of people buy HD products because it is one of the few brands they’ve actually heard of. This creates a sense of trust. Confronted with a consumer purchase of an item I don’t know much about, I would probably opt for the brand I know, even if it were more expensive.
This article is meant to help bridge that gap. Because, the bottom line is, HD is not the only manufacturer of high-quality window treatments. They are just the best known. If you want a similar selection of high-quality blinds and shades, I urge you to consider either Graber or Kirsch, both companies make comparable window treatments with the full range of options.
Kirsch may not be well known, but they have been making quality products since 1907. The same is true for Graber who’s been around since 1939. Both companies offer a great selection of blinds and shades, from mini blinds to roman shades – and just about everything in between.
So if you are one of the many people who, in the near future, will be looking for HD products online only to be turned away, I urge you to say “Afscheid Hunter Douglas!” (HD’s headquarters are in the Netherlands and that’s how you say goodbye in Dutch) and hello to Graber Blinds or Kirsch Blinds.
Here’s a couple interesting factoids:
- Kirsch started as a curtain rod company and their rods were featured in the movie classic, “Gone With The Wind” in 1939.
- Kirsch Sunaire Venetian blinds are featured in the hit film, “Hit The Jackpot” starring Jimmy Stewart in 1950.
